In order to establish an game class at Şehit Şahinbey Special Education Job Application Center, Şahinbey, Gaziantep, students devoted themselves with their own opportunities by making the activity class physically sufficient and equipped it with educational materials and toys that are suitable for free time activities. Game class was opened with the participation of HKU Education Faculty members and students. During the day, events were themed with games. Faculty members shared their experiences about the importance of games in children’s lives and gave information about using them as a teaching tool for individuals with special needs.
HKU Special Education Faculty members supported the project with the idea of, “In the game, there is a hero role for every child”, and stated that appropriate behavioral habits should be gained according to the cultural features through activities of individual and groups to the children who are considered to be the years in which the foundation of the personality starts developing. Asst.Prof.Dr. Latife Özaydın mentioned about the importance of creating playgrounds. She said, “Games are not only a tool of entertainment but also it is an experience that consists of the emotions, desires and environmental effects of the player. While playing a game, children solve and express their goals, happiness, anger, love and hatred. Games are tools for children to express themselves in accordance with their enviroments. For children who need different types of support because of their developmental features, games should be used as a means of an important teaching tool for ice breaking. Since there are permanent memories and experience in games, they also have an important role in individuals’ education who need special attention.”
The students who are the founders of this project said, “ We wanted to support the deficiencies in educational field of Gaziantep. The only thing that we ask from people of Gaziantep is to be more sensitive about the individuals who need special needs. No matter how hard the process was, our endeavor is very educational and exciting.”
HKU Education Faculty Special Education Department identified the necessities of the school administration ad teachers and decided on cooperating in the light of the project. HKU students who are candidates of future teachers found an opportunity to review lessons in the practices of the teachers at the school.
