Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU) Faculty of Engineering students have developed a project on computer-vision-based smart chair and created a design that will make life easier for thousands of people with disabilities.
HKU Electric-Electronic Engineering students Efgan Uğur, Nihat Yılmaz Şimşek, Mücahid Kaya and Mehmet Kiraz aim to make thousands of disabled people’s lives easier with computer- vision-based smart chair. The Project held with the support of HKU Computer Engineering faculty member Asst. Assoc. Dr. Abdulhafez Abdulhafez and from industrial partner A2Tech Informatics, HKU Research Assistant Ali Acıoğlu is expected to be hope or disabled citizens along with bringing many innovations.
Efkan Uğur, the designer of the device: “Today, image processing applications, especially with the rapid development of digital technologies, are applied in almost every sector and using of these applications is increasing. Especially, with developing image processing technology, many new devices have been produced and many devices have been improved by updating them. Wheelchairs which were enhanced with image processing technology ensure easier transportation for people with disabilities. Unlike many wheelchairs, the smart wheelchair in this project is designed more efficiently for people who cannot use their reflexes by birth, accidents or after some illnesses. Also it has been convenient and safer project for disabled people.
Ali Acıoğlu said that in the project they took a basic wheelchair and turned it into a smart wheelchair by putting a camera and a processor he also added, “In this design, while the wheelchair is moving, the image taken from the camera is processed in the processor which is called ‘Rasperry Pi’ and is sent to the micro control to operate the motor by using the image processing technology. Thus, the wheelchair can reach intended destination autonomously (without a remote control, can operate itself).”
The project is supported by TUBITAK 2209 Industry-Oriented Final Project. It is stated that with this support both motivated and encouraged students to do better. Also the image processing technology and the background knowledge that was gained in this project will help this technique to be a success in other fields. Moreover, the commercialization of this project is intended with A2Tech Informatics which is planning to be often talked about with their future projects. Start of a new era on smart wheelchairs and to carry out studies on image processing technology is said to be the most important outcomes of this project.
