Research Funding & Project Coordination at HKU
Hasan Kalyoncu University invests in the curiosity of its researchers. Through the Office of Scientific Research Projects Coordination — known across Turkish higher education by the abbreviation BAP (Bilimsel Araştırma Projeleri) — we provide the funding, mentorship and administrative support that turn a strong research question into a completed, publishable project.
About BAP
The Office of Scientific Research Projects Coordination (BAP) at Hasan Kalyoncu University manages the institution’s internal research funding scheme. It supports faculty-led investigations, master’s and doctoral thesis research, interdisciplinary collaborations and the equipment and travel needed to carry that work through to publication. The office reports to the Rectorate and operates under the regulations issued by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), ensuring that every funded project meets national standards for scientific integrity, ethics and financial accountability.
Funding Programmes
HKU offers five distinct internal funding lines, each with its own call cycle, budget ceiling and review criteria.
Faculty-Led Research Projects
The flagship programme. Open to full-time HKU faculty as principal investigators, with a single annual call. Awards run from one to three years, with budget ceilings published in each call (placeholder: up to TL [amount]). Projects are expected to result in peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations or follow-on external grant applications.
Graduate Thesis Projects (Postgraduate Thesis Projects)
A dedicated funding line for master’s and doctoral students whose thesis research requires laboratory consumables, fieldwork costs, software licences or specialist equipment. Applications must be co-signed by the thesis supervisor and aligned with the student’s approved thesis proposal.
Targeted Research Calls
Periodic thematic calls aligned with HKU’s institutional priorities — currently artificial intelligence, sustainability and the green transition, and public health. These calls typically reward interdisciplinary teams that bring together two or more faculties.
Equipment & Infrastructure Grants
Co-funding for shared laboratory equipment, instrumentation upgrades and core facility expansion. Awards are made on the condition that the equipment is registered with a host laboratory and made accessible to other HKU researchers.
Conference & Mobility Grants
Travel and registration support for faculty and graduate students presenting original work at recognised international conferences, or undertaking short research visits to partner institutions.
Eligibility
- Full-time HKU faculty members may apply as principal investigator on any programme.
- HKU graduate students may apply to the Graduate Thesis Projects line with a written endorsement from their thesis supervisor.
- Co-investigators from external Turkish or international institutions are permitted, provided the principal investigator is affiliated with HKU.
- Applicants must have no overdue final reports from previous BAP-funded projects.
Application Process
- Review the current call. All open calls, deadlines and budget ceilings are published on this page and circulated to faculties.
- Prepare your proposal using the official BAP templates (downloadable below). Include a work plan, budget justification, ethics statement and CV of the research team.
- Submit through the BAP system at [BAP submission portal — placeholder URL]. Late or incomplete submissions are not reviewed.
- Peer review is conducted by the BAP Commission, supported by external referees where specialist expertise is required.
- Award decision is normally communicated within four to six weeks of the submission deadline.
- Project execution begins on the contract start date. Principal investigators submit an interim progress report at the project midpoint and a final scientific and financial report on completion.

External Funding Support
BAP is also HKU’s first stop for researchers preparing external grant applications. Our team helps with budget construction, partner search, eligibility checks and proposal review for the major funders active in Turkey:
- TÜBİTAK — the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, the country’s principal national science funder.
- Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ — the European Union’s flagship research and education programmes.
- KOSGEB — the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organisation, supporting university-industry collaboration and entrepreneurship.
- Bilateral and ministerial calls issued by Turkish ministries and international partners.
Researchers planning an external submission are encouraged to contact the BAP Office at the proposal-development stage, not at the submission deadline.
