HKU Climbs 45 Places in the World Green Campus Ranking

Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU), which has placed environmentally responsible practices at the heart of its campus development since its founding, has climbed 45 places in the 2024 edition of the UI GreenMetric ranking and now sits among the world’s 250 greenest campuses. The platform evaluates universities worldwide on environmental awareness, energy, waste, transportation management and sustainability.

According to the 2024 results announced at https://greenmetric.ui.ac.id/rankings/overall-rankings-2024, HKU earned 1,225 points in Setting and Infrastructure, 1,575 in Energy and Climate Change, 1,425 in Waste, 800 in Water, 1,550 in Transportation, and 1,350 in Education and Research, for a total of 7,925 points. With this score, HKU ranked 217th among the world’s greenest universities, 16th among 200 universities in Türkiye, and 4th among the country’s 74 foundation universities, reinforcing its credentials in sustainability.

HKU Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli noted that, in addition to the existing solar power plant, campus rooftops have been fitted with domestically produced solar panels, raising installed capacity to 2.3 MW and meeting roughly 70 percent of the university’s energy needs. “We entered the World Green Campus Ranking at 375th place on our first application. As of 2024, HKU has climbed 45 places to 217th. Having our work in this area formally recognized is both significant and gratifying. I congratulate every unit that contributed to this result. We attach great importance to research on the environment, sustainability, climate change and renewable energy. We have created sustainable social spaces on campus, planted nearly ten thousand new saplings, built bicycle paths, and rolled out projects to harvest and reuse rainwater. By focusing more closely on zero waste, we earned our ‘Zero Waste’ certificate. We will keep working at full strength on innovative sustainability projects to deliver further results in the years ahead,” he said.
