The “Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Gaziantep” Congress, organised by the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU), was held with the participation of leading experts in the field at the HKU Culture and Congress Centre, with an environmentally friendly approach.
Aiming to cover a broad perspective on Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and to offer participants a rich platform for knowledge sharing with expert speakers, the congress was attended by Prof. Dr. Kezban Bayramlar, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences; Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yakut, Head of the Division of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Health Sciences; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serkan Usgu, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation; 18 expert speakers from among physicians and physiotherapists; academics; and students.
Giving the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yakut, Congress Chair and Head of the Division of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, said: “First of all, I would like to state that we want to start a tradition with this year’s congress. We aim to establish a regularly held, travelling congress in order to bring together our colleagues who have devoted their hearts and efforts to Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and have made scientific contributions in this field for years, and to discuss and share developments in the area. The subject of this year’s congress may be narrow in scope, but having more than 300 registered participants made us extremely happy. This is an indication that interest in and contributions to our field are growing. This congress offers a platform where we will carry one another further by sharing our knowledge and experience. For a scientifically productive interaction and collaboration, I thank everyone who contributed to organising the congress, especially HKU Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli.”
Prof. Dr. Kezban Bayramlar, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who said she was excited to organise the first of an environmentally friendly congress, said: “In 2017, under the coordination of our esteemed colleague Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yakut, we carried out a comprehensive study on scoliosis covering Gaziantep and its surrounding districts. Likewise, I believe this important congress will create good awareness within our university, faculty and department, and that its scientific content will be of a high standard. For this reason, I thank Congress Chair Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yakut, HKU Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli, and everyone who contributed.”
At the first Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Gaziantep Congress, registration and scientific programme details were shared with participants digitally, while a wide range of topics on Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis were covered, including surgery, cardiovascular problems, orthopaedic surgery, early orthosis treatment, different physiotherapy applications, proprioceptive training, the vestibular system, pain and quality of life, and the qualitative success of treatment, as well as school screenings, family education and sports, along with 20 different oral presentations.
