The final stage of this year’s seventh DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition began with opening speeches by Türk Reasürans General Manager Selva Eren and Hasan Kalyoncu University Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli.

The award ceremony of the competition, which has become a tradition, will take place on Thursday, 7 March, with the honoured presence of Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek and with the participation of HKU Board of Trustees Deputy Chair Haluk Kalyoncu and the protocol.

I CONGRATULATE ALL THE TEAMS THAT COMPETED AND REACHED THE FINAL AND WISH THEM SUCCESS

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the competition, Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU) Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli said: “The 7th DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition, hosted by Hasan Kalyoncu University, brings together engineer and architect candidates and allows them to demonstrate their skills in earthquake-resistant building design. Thanks to this important competition, our students also find the opportunity to develop and test themselves by supporting their theoretical knowledge of earthquake-resistant building design with practical skills. As Hasan Kalyoncu University, we always attach great importance to and support such events and activities carried out to increase the technical knowledge and equipment of university students. The teams that passed the preliminary rounds met this year at Hasan Kalyoncu University in Gaziantep for the final. I congratulate everyone who took part in this competition from a wide variety of universities across Türkiye and reached the final, and I wish them success.”

WE CANNOT AFFORD TO BE COMPLACENT!

Türk Reasürans General Manager Selva Eren, drawing attention in his opening speech to the importance of the DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Competition, which has become a tradition, said: “As DASK, we continue our work with all our strength so that our country becomes stronger in the face of disasters. We do not become complacent about what we have achieved on this path; while fulfilling our responsibilities, we keep working to secure our future. The DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition, one of our most valuable projects carried out to make a safer future possible and to serve our country, Türkiye, brings us together for the seventh time. Gaziantep, one of the most beautiful cities of Anatolia, and Hasan Kalyoncu University, which places science, research and innovation at the centre of its approach to education, are hosting us this year.”

THE AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED ON 7 MARCH

DASK (Natural Catastrophe Insurance Institution), which operates to create earthquake awareness and a consciousness of living with earthquakes in society, has organised the “DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition” since 2014 in order to contribute to the professional development of the civil engineers and architects of the future, who will play important roles in the design and production of earthquake-resistant buildings, and to emphasise the importance of earthquake engineering.

The DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition has three main objectives:

• To offer students the opportunity to work on the design and model-building stages of earthquake-resistant tall buildings,
• To promote the profession of earthquake engineering and encourage students to specialise in this field,
• To raise awareness of earthquakes and earthquake-resistant buildings.

The first day of the four-day final stage was devoted to opening speeches and preparatory work. While the presentations and scoring of the building models take place on the second day, on the third day of the competition the building models carefully prepared by the teams will be tested on a shaking table that simulates earthquakes. On the fourth day, the excitement of the awards will take place.

In the competition, organised this year under the concept “Sound Buildings, Strong Tomorrows”, the models that pass the earthquake test without collapsing will also be evaluated according to economic scoring and aesthetic scoring criteria. The first prize will go to the project of the team that achieves the highest total annual gain as a result of the benefit-cost calculation. At the ceremony to be held on Thursday, 7 March, the teams that place in the competition will receive their awards. In addition, five special awards, namely the Türk Reasürans Special Award, the Best Architecture Special Award, the Best Earthquake Performance Special Award, the Best Communication Skills and Best Presentation Award, and the Best Competition Spirit Award, determined by the votes of the competition participants, will also be presented at the same ceremony.
