Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU) achieved great success in the international UI GreenMetric 2025 ranking, which evaluates sustainability practices and green campus indicators of university campuses, placing 201st in the world with 8,150 points. Having risen 174 places in the last 5 years, HKU ranked 23rd in Türkiye and 5th among foundation universities.
Every year, UI GreenMetric evaluates the world’s leading universities in six areas: setting and infrastructure, waste management, energy and climate change, water management, transportation and education, scoring higher education institutions separately in each category and presenting an international performance table. In the 2025 evaluation, HKU received a total of 8,150 points: 1,325 in the Setting and Infrastructure category, 1,675 in Energy and Climate Change, 1,425 in Waste Management, 750 in Water Management, 1,575 in Transportation Services Management and 1,400 in Education and Research. HKU thus ranked 201st among 1,745 green and environmentally friendly universities worldwide, 23rd among participating universities from Türkiye and 5th among foundation universities, once again demonstrating its ambition in this field.
Our Goal for Next Year Is to Be Among the World’s Top 150 Universities
HKU Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Gül Rengin Küçükerdoğan made the following assessment of the ranking success: “When we first took part in UI GreenMetric in 2021, we ranked 375th among the world’s universities. Today, being 201st in the world is a clear sign that all of our work in the field of sustainability has been recognised on the international stage. Thanks to our renewable energy investments, we meet approximately 70 per cent of our campus’s energy needs from solar energy. By installing domestically produced solar panels on our rooftops, we have raised our installed capacity to 2.3 megawatts. Obtaining our Zero Waste certificate, planting nearly ten thousand saplings across the campus, and building cycle paths and rainwater harvesting systems are concrete examples of our environmentally conscious approach. We place sustainability at the centre of our education and research activities and train our students with this awareness. Ranking 23rd in Türkiye and 5th among foundation universities shows that HKU is not merely a regional actor but a university on a global scale. Our goal is to move forward with the same determination, to be among the top 150 universities in the UI GreenMetric world ranking next year, and to leave environmental responsibility as a strong legacy to future generations.
