The campus of Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU), which has created a liveable and sustainable campus by placing environmentally conscious approaches at the centre since its founding, climbed 45 places in one go compared with last year in the 2024 ranking of the UI GreenMetric platform, which evaluates world universities in the areas of environmental awareness, energy, waste, transportation management and sustainability, and was listed among the world’s top 250 greenest campuses.

According to the 2024 results of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings platform, announced at ‘ https://greenmetric.ui.ac.id/rankings/overall-rankings-2024’, HKU scored 1225 in the Setting and Infrastructure category, 1575 in Energy and Climate Change, 1425 in Waste, 800 in Water, 1550 in Transportation, and 1350 in Education and Research, totalling 7925 points. It ranked 217th among the world’s greenest and most environmentally friendly universities according to GreenMetric, 16th among 200 universities in Türkiye and 4th among 74 foundation universities, once again proving its claim in this field.

Stating that, in addition to the existing solar power plant, the campus roofs have also been equipped with locally produced solar panels, raising the installed capacity to 2.3 MW, and that about 70% of the university’s energy needs can be met in this way, HKU Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli said: “In the World Green Campus Ranking, where we entered the list at 375th place in our first application, HKU rose 45 places to 217th place as of 2024. This is extremely important and gratifying in terms of the recognition and appreciation of the work done in this field. I congratulate all our units that contributed to this successful result. We attach great importance and give support to research in the fields of environment, sustainability, climate change and renewable energy. We have created sustainable social spaces on our campus, planted nearly ten thousand new saplings, built bicycle paths, and implemented projects on rainwater collection and reuse. By focusing even more on zero waste, we obtained our ‘Zero Waste’ certificate. With the innovative projects we will carry out on sustainability, we will continue to work with all our strength to achieve successful results in the coming years as well.”
