This month’s guest of the “Science and Technology Talks” series, organised by the Faculty of Engineering at Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU), was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eren Özceylan of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Gaziantep University, with his presentation titled “The European Green Deal and Sustainability”.

Giving information about the main objective of the European Green Deal and assessing sustainable transportation in its different dimensions, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eren Özceylan said, “Carbon emission gases are rising very seriously in the world and in Türkiye. That is why the first RIO Agreement was made in 1992, KYOTO in 1997 and the PARIS climate agreement in 2015. Because the trend is not good. Türkiye’s average carbon emissions rose above the world average in 2020. The largest share of carbon emissions currently belongs to the USA and China. Türkiye accounts for less than 1 per cent of the world. As carbon emission gases increase, temperatures rise. With the Paris Climate Agreement, the aim is to reduce global carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and to bring them down to zero by 2050. Türkiye signed the Paris Climate Agreement in 2021. With this agreement, Türkiye has pledged to reduce the increase in emissions by 21 per cent as of 2030”, he said. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eren Özceylan also added that a “Carbon Border Tax” is planned for 2026 in order to prevent energy-intensive production from moving outside the EU borders because of emission reduction measures (carbon leakage) and, as a result, to prevent the EU economy from being negatively affected.
