Bullying Subject Discussed on the Psychology Agenda

Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU) Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences, Department of Psychology organized the 21st edition of ‘Psychology Agenda’ this year with the theme of ‘bullying.’ The event took place with the participation of psychologists, and guidance counselors from HKU students, as well as from Gaziantep and surrounding cities.

Held at the HKU Congress and Culture Center and focusing on the main theme of ‘bullying,’ the Psychology Agenda featured speakers such as Prof. Dr. Mücahit Öztürk from Ibn Haldun University Psychology Department, Prof. Dr. Osman Tolga Arıcak from Bogazici University Basic Education Department, and Research Assistant Betül Korkmaz from HKU Faculty of Law.

Emphasizing the importance of addressing significant issues in the field of psychology, creating awareness, and learning together, HKU Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli stated during the 21st Psychology Agenda: “Today, we focus on the serious problem of ‘bullying,’ which our society, especially young people, faces. Combating bullying is the responsibility of not only individuals but the entire society. Developing effective strategies to combat bullying in educational institutions, workplaces, digital platforms, and social environments will contribute to the well-being of both individuals and society. We thank our Department of Psychology for bringing this important issue to the agenda.”

Following the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Mücahit Öztürk delivered a presentation titled “Psychopathologies in Children Who Are Bullied and Bully Others.” In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Mücahit Öztürk discussed the concept and types of bullying, the psychological effects of bullying, bullying in the school environment, and issues related to psychopathological symptoms in children, emphasizing important points with case examples. Prof. Dr. Osman Tolga Arıcak presented on “Cyberbullying in Children and Adolescents,” providing comprehensive information on the concept of ‘cyber,’ and cyberbullying that occurs on the internet and in electronic environments. Research Assistant Betül Korkmaz addressed the legal aspects and regulations in the fight against bullying with her presentation titled “Legal Approach to Peer Bullying in Schools.
