The excitement of the final has begun at the 2024 DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition

The final stage of the DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition, held for the seventh time this year, has begun with opening speeches by Selva Eren, the General Manager of Turkish Reinsurance, and Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli, the Rector of Hasan Kalyoncu University.

The award ceremony of the traditional competition will take place on Thursday, March 7th, with the presence of Mehmet Şimşek, the Minister of Treasury and Finance, Haluk Kalyoncu, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of HKU, and other dignitaries.

I congratulate and wish success to all the participating teams and those who made it to the final.

During the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli, the Rector of Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU), stated, ‘The 7th DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition, organized under the auspices of Hasan Kalyoncu University, brings together engineering and architecture students to showcase their talents in earthquake-resistant building design. Our students have the opportunity to enhance their theoretical knowledge with practical skills through this important competition, allowing them to develop and test themselves. At Hasan Kalyoncu University, we always prioritize and support such events and activities aimed at enhancing the technical knowledge and skills of our students. I congratulate and wish success to all the teams that passed the preliminary rounds and made it to the final in Gaziantep this year.’

In her opening speech, Selva Eren, the General Manager of Turkish Reinsurance, emphasized the importance of the established DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition, saying, ‘At DASK, we continue our efforts with all our might to strengthen our country against disasters. We do not succumb to complacency in the face of our achievements but continue to work tirelessly to secure our future while fulfilling our responsibilities. The DASK Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition, one of our most valuable projects aimed at creating a safer future and serving our country, brings us together for the seventh time. Gaziantep, one of the most beautiful cities in Anatolia, and Hasan Kalyoncu University, which places science, research, and innovation at the core of its educational approach, are hosting us this year.’

The awards will be presented on March 7th, marking the conclusion of the four-day final stage. Models of earthquake-resistant buildings that pass the earthquake simulation test without collapsing will be evaluated based on economic and aesthetic criteria. The winning project will receive the first prize based on the highest total annual profit from the cost-benefit analysis. In addition to the overall prize, five special awards including the Turkish Reinsurance Special Award, Best Architectural Special Award, Best Earthquake Performance Special Award, Best Communication Skill and Presentation Special Award, and the Spirit of the Competition Special Award determined by the participants’ votes, will also be presented during the ceremony.
