“Final of the Earthquake Resilient Building Design Competition,” organized under the coordination of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (DASK) with the motto “Solid Buildings, Strong Tomorrows,” will take place at Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKÜ) from March 4th to 7th.
The competition aims to raise awareness about earthquakes and promote a consciousness of living with earthquakes. It also seeks to contribute to the professional development of future civil engineers and architects who will play a crucial role in constructing earthquake-resistant buildings. The participating teams will test multi-story building models they constructed on a “shake table” under three different earthquake effects. The winning team will be determined based on the earthquake performance demonstrated by the model buildings during the competition.
Highlighting the significance of hosting the final of the Earthquake Resilient Building Design Competition in Gaziantep, which is among the cities affected by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6th, HKÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli stated, “This competition will encourage innovative approaches in earthquake-resistant building design, increase knowledge and skill capacity in the field, and contribute to reducing earthquake risks by making future structures safer. Teams participating with shake tables will simulate earthquakes on the model designs, closely monitoring the behaviors of the structures. I wish all participating teams success. We thank Turkish Reinsurance and DASK General Manager Selva Eren and DASK Chairman of the Board Emine Feray Sezgin for their collaboration and support. On this occasion, I once again extend my condolences to those who lost their lives in the earthquakes on February 6, 2023, described as the disaster of the century, and offer my heartfelt sympathy to their families.”
This year’s competition, organized for the seventh time, will be hosted by Hasan Kalyoncu University and includes participation from Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University, Altınbaş University, Bilim University, Bozok University, Bülent Ecevit University, Erzurum Technical University, Eskişehir Technical University, Gebze Technical University, Hacettepe University, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa, Izmir High Technology University, Karadeniz Technical University, Katip Çelebi University, MEF University, National Defense University Land Forces Military Academy, Ondokuz Mayıs University, Middle East Technical University, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, Sakarya University, Süleyman Demirel University, Uludağ University, Yeditepe University, and Yıldız Technical University.
