Award for “Rights-Based” Thesis for Disability Education

Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU) Social Sciences Institute Special Education Department Special Education Master’s Degree Program 2020 graduate Ahmet Nedim Gündoğar’s thesis titled “Opinions on Instructional Adaptations for Visually Impaired Students Attending Higher Education” was deemed worthy of an award.

Head of Special Education Teaching Department of HKU Faculty of Education Assoc. Dr. Thesis study completed under the supervision of Nilay Kayhan; The Boğaziçi University Social Policy Forum and the Research Worldwide İstanbul partnership won the “Disability Studies Graduate Thesis Award” organized with the support of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Lund University. The award ceremony, which will be held with the contributions of researchers from different disciplines engaged in education and research activities in the field of disability, will be held on the Zoom platform on December 10, at 18:00 on Human Rights Day.

Sustainable and accessible education for all

Expressing his opinions about the study and the process, Assoc. Dr. Nilay Kayhan made the following statements in her speeches: “Education is a fundamental right for every individual. In higher education institutions, rights-based, accessible, full participation in academic, social and cultural life should be adopted and regulations based on “sustainable and accessible education for all” approach should be made. Universities aiming to provide their graduates with academic, social and cultural knowledge, skills and competence; In a sense, they are educational institutions that believe in the importance of scientific thinking, show a positive attitude in terms of communication skills, respect human rights, exhibit a democratic attitude and contribute to their competencies in becoming world citizens. In this sense, as HKU Faculty of Education Special Education Department, we aim to enable our students to gain competencies that will contribute to the society they live in and offer solutions to problems at the end of their undergraduate and graduate education.

Its general purpose is to adapt visually impaired university students to their academic processes; expresses my pride on behalf of our university, faculty and department, since this study, which aims to evaluate teaching in terms of planning, implementation, evaluation and monitoring individual achievements, has been awarded by institutions and organizations that support the importance of rights-based, fair and full participation in education, our thesis student Ahmet Once again, I congratulate Nedim GÜNDOĞAR. Ahmet Nedim Gündoğar, whose thesis study was awarded, said: “I especially thank my university and department lecturers, for whom I am proud to be a student. In this sense, we, as teachers, are expected to be able to know and use scientific evidence-based practices effectively. In our thesis study that we conducted with the focus of accessibility in education, we aimed to draw attention to the legal regulations in “unimpeded university” education, as well as effective practices, roles and responsibilities, rights-based inclusive education, taking into account the needs of each individual. We can think that studies based on determining effective practices in the higher education process, obtaining and sharing monitoring and evaluation data will contribute to sustainable and accessible quality education for everyone”.
