Hasan Kalyoncu University Achieves Dual Success in Patent and Research Performance

Two inventions developed at Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU) have been officially registered as patents: “A New Plate Geometry for Plate Heat Exchangers”, designed to improve energy efficiency, and “Steel Fibre with Elliptical Ends”, which contributes to structural safety. In addition, the university was placed in the Q1 category in the SCImago Institutions Rankings 2026 and ranked among the top five foundation universities in the “Research Rank” category.

“We Continue to Strengthen Our Culture of Research and Innovation”

HKU Acting Rector Prof. Dr Gül Rengin Küçükerdoğan stated that these achievements are significant indicators of the university’s research and innovation vision. She said:

“As Hasan Kalyoncu University, we attach great importance to transforming knowledge into social benefit, technology and high value-added outputs. The patents developed by our academics are particularly valuable in terms of their contribution to strategic fields such as energy efficiency, industrial applications and structural safety. Our university’s placement in the Q1 category in the SCImago 2026 results, as well as its ranking among the top five foundation universities in the ‘Research Rank’ category, demonstrates that our research and innovation ecosystem is growing stronger each day. As we continue our research, development and innovation-oriented efforts with determination, we will keep supporting the transformation of knowledge into economic and social value. I congratulate our academics, researchers and students who contributed to these achievements.”

HKU Dean of Research Assoc. Prof. Dr Serkan Aracı also underlined that the patent registrations are concrete outcomes of the university’s research-oriented development strategy. He said:

“At our university, we approach research as a holistic process encompassing publications, projects, patents, commercialisation and social benefit. Our registered patents demonstrate our capacity to produce application-oriented knowledge and our competence in transforming research outcomes into tangible outputs. The success achieved in the SCImago 2026 rankings is also an important indicator of HKU’s high-quality research performance and scientific visibility. As the Deanery of Research, we will continue to strengthen the research culture, increase national and international collaborations, and support the research activities of our academics.”

Developed by Dr Ahmed Sadık, a faculty member at HKU Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the invention titled “A New Plate Geometry for Plate Heat Exchangers” aims to improve heat transfer efficiency by enhancing surface geometry in plate heat exchangers. With this new geometry, the invention seeks to achieve higher performance within the same dimensions or a more compact design while maintaining the same level of performance.

Another invention developed at HKU and registered as a patent, “Steel Fibre with Elliptical Ends”, increases the durability of structures by providing stronger anchorage when added to concrete. The invention, which is particularly significant in terms of earthquake safety, is reported to provide notable improvements in concrete strength compared with straight-ended steel fibres.

Among the Top Five Foundation Universities for Research Performance

In addition to its patent achievements, HKU ranked 69th overall in Türkiye in the SCImago Institutions Rankings 2026 and was placed in the Q1 category, the highest quartile. In the “Research Rank” category, the university ranked 20th across Türkiye and 5th among foundation universities.
