Hasan Kalyoncu University Climbs 234 Places in UI GreenMetric Over the Past Six Years

Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU) has achieved significant success in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, an international ranking that assesses sustainability practices and green campus indicators at universities. HKU first entered the ranking in 2021 at 375th place worldwide and has since climbed 234 places over the past six years to rank 141st globally. Among the 2,016 universities assessed worldwide, HKU ranked 14th among universities from Türkiye and 3rd among foundation universities.

Each year, UI GreenMetric evaluates universities from around the world across seven areas: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation, education and research, and governance and digitalisation. The ranking provides an international assessment of higher education institutions’ sustainability performance.

HKU Rector Prof. Dr. Gül Rengin Küçükerdoğan stated that it was gratifying to see the university’s work in sustainability reflected in international rankings. She said, “The fact that our university, which ranked 375th in the world in 2021, has now risen to 141st place is an important outcome of the determined efforts we have been pursuing in the field of sustainability for many years. At our university, we regard sustainability not merely as an environmental responsibility, but as an integral part of all our activities, from education and research to energy management and campus life. I would like to thank all our academic and administrative staff, students and stakeholders who have contributed to this achievement.”

HKU Sustainability Office Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr Şafak Hengirmen Tercan said, “The continued improvement of our university’s position in the UI GreenMetric rankings each year is an important source of motivation for us.
