HKU students set up with a new motto called “They Scattered Thousands of Hopes With A Smile” under “Social Sensivity Projects”.
Sakine Hakkoymaz, HKU lecturer and coordinator of this project, visited child leukemia patients in Gaziantep Oncology Hospital with Merve Sağat, Bilge Kara, Kübra Kara, Gülseren Demirel and Ayşe Koç, who are the students of Department of Psychological Counselling and Guidance.
Kübra Kara says: “Nowadays, leukaemia is increasing rapidly regardless of age. In this disease process, the most important help to patients and their caregivers is motivation. We wore many enjoyful costumes and prepared a morale day to children. We tried to create beautiful moments to children and their families. We visited in certain time of periods. We tried to make them with various toys. We tried to make them forget their disease and create a cheerful environment to fight disease.
The HKU students wore colourful clown and animal costumes and took care of child patients. Also the students indicated to patients’ parents that they are ready to help whenever they need.
